Leonard Pitts is a columnist for the Miami Herald and an author of multiple books. He releases a new column discussing various topics including politics and culture twice a week. He has won many awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 2004. His columns have brought him critical acclaim, especially his 2001 column “We'll Go Forward From This Moment” a letter directed at the September 11th terrorists. This column put Pitts on the national stage and he has had a large following ever since. Pitts has also taught courses on writing at various universities, including George Washington University in 2013. His books have also been well received, including his latest one, Freeman. Pitts graduated from the University of Southern California at the young age of 19 with an English degree. He is 56 years old.
